Collecting Aside from going to a celebrity in person, you can write him to request his autograph. When you write, send two of your white autograph cards and a stamped envelope addressed to yourself. Every letter may not produce the signature you want, but you will be surprised how many do.

A variation of this hobby is collecting autographed photographs of stars. Photographs of motion picture stars are generally available at 25 cents each. The photos are usually eight by ten or five by seven inches, but the signature is likely to have been printed from the photographic negative and is not, therefore, an authentic "autograph."

There probably is less than one chance in a million of acquiring the autograph of a historical personage by accident or even by a protracted treasure hunt. Such autographs are displayed in museums or are in the hands of collectors who will not sell them. The relatively few historical autographs that are available to the collector are held by dealers, and the price is likely to be prohibitive for the average person.

Autographs sometimes appear at auctions which are held to settle estates. Such auctions in the larger cities are well attended by knowledgeable collectors and dealers, and it is practically impossible to walk off with a bargain in competition with them.
