Collecting The fashion in collecting labels has changed. Not so many years ago it was the habit of the collector (or was he an exhibitionist?) to have his trunks and bags completely covered by stickers of hotels, steamship companies, railroads, airlines, and any other facilities that reflect travel. Today the luggage of the average tourist may bear no more labels than those that are essential on his current trip.

If you are a traveler, your bags still get plastered with stickers which you can remove when you get home. But if you are a collector, you make it a point to get at least one set of additional stickers and carefully pack them flat so that they will be in good condition when you get them home.

Baggage labels belong among your souvenirs when they can evoke memories of pleasant vacations and travels. You no longer want a label to show how widely traveled you are. It is far more personal than that; it is something that belongs to you, that is a part of your life. For this reason, the sticker from a nearby hotel in the mountains can be more precious to you than one from Singapore's famous Raffles Hotel or Cairo's storied Shepherd's Hotel, either of which would have been a treasure of rare worth in the old days.
