Collecting The second-hand book store is the best place to pick up what you want if you are collecting books on any one particular subject. Such books do not ordinarily have a broad appeal, and unless factors other than the subject matter are involved, they have little value. You are likely to pick up real gems for your collection for anything from 10 cents to $1.00.

The auction gallery is a good source for rare book collectors, but with wealthy collectors and dealers bidding, the prices are likely to be high. Auctions make better hunting grounds for collectors of books on special subjects. Unless a dealer knows a collector who is also interested in your subject, he is not likely to i bid, and you may pick up some excellent items for your purposes.

The rare book dealer is just that. He stocks books only because they are rare, and while he may have some volumes on a subject that interests you, they will be priced as rare books. On the other hand, if you do want rare books, this dealer can serve you well in a dual capacity as a source of items for your collection and as an adviser. He knows rare books and rare book values, and if he is a reputable dealer, he will give you sincere, dependable advice and a square deal in price.
