You might guess that doll collecting is a hobby for women. It is, of course, for many women have been collecting dolls since childhood. Boys, unless brought up with sisters, have no use for dolls, but it is a fact that a surprisingly large number of men—and we do mean men—collect dolls.
If you attempt to assemble a collection of antique dolls, you will find it a costly venture. They are exceedingly rare, and many of them are held by museums and wealthy collectors who will not sell them. However, there are many interesting kinds of doll collections that can be quite inexpensive.
Many people collect dolls of different nationalities. Such dolls are on sale generally at rather modest prices. A Chinese doll, for example, has the facial characteristics of a Chinese and is dressed in an authentic Chinese costume. Many women prefer to make their own national costumes for their dolls. This entails trips to the library to be sure the costumes are authentic, as well as scouting around for the proper materials.
If you have occasion to travel abroad, or if one of your friends does, you can add to your collection at lower prices than those in the United States, although a trip to the United Nations Gift Shop in New York will net you a complete and inexpensive collection of "foreign" dolls.
