Collecting If you read the stamp advertisements carefully, you will see that it is not necessary to buy any stamps in order to first receive approvals; some dealers offer to send approvals without advertising any specific stamps for sale.

Keep each stamp in the place allotted to it in your album. The stamps are mounted on hinges, small pieces of light-weight paper, one side of which is treated with a unique adhesive from which you can detach the stamp easily without damaging it. Other essential items of equipment are a magnifying glass, a perforation gauge, and a watermark detector.

More than any other hobby, perhaps, stamp collecting leads you into a new and very wide world. You will find, as you get deeper and deeper into it, that you are suddenly getting very interested in the tropical fish of New Caledonia or the animals of East Africa; you will discover a yearning to find out more about the Battle of Bull Run or the Siege at Valley Forge; you will wonder how the Graf Zeppelin succeeded as a mail carrier, or how Byrd got his letters in Little America; you will scrutinize each stamp for a tiny, value-increasing error, and discover that the stamp you hold between your tweezers is a small fortune in historical fact and a key to a great store of knowledge.
