As with pewter, there is no reason why you should think of silver purely in terms of the antique. The chief silver producing regions today are in the Western Hemisphere. The United States is the second largest silver producing country in the world, Mexico being the first. Idaho, Utah, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, California, and Nevada head the long list of silver producing states. With silver being mined practically in our own back yards, it is understandable that so many lovely pieces of modern American silver are available today. The United States is not only a leading producer of silver, but also the world's largest consumer of sterling silver. And the principal industrial consumer of American silver is the silverware industry. Companies such as Tiffany and Company, the Gorham Manufacturing Company, and the International Silver Company are producing fine, modern silverware today that ranks in quality and beauty with the work of some of the most celebrated individual silversmiths of old. Silver collectors who are prepared to invest quite modest sums of money today will have no difficulty in acquiring appealing modern pieces that will take on additional value as the years go by.
