Crafts Tools and supplies for the bookbinder are available at hobby shops and at schools that give the courses. Only a few pieces of equipment are required for binding a book, and if you have a home workshop you can make nearly all of them at very low cost. The basic essentials are a clamping press and a sewing frame; the working outfit becomes complete with the addition of some cardboard, paper, and binder's cloth. At first you will probably want to practice with blank paper and construct such things as appointment books or diaries and save working with printed pages or rarities until you have learned by doing. Given a fair amount of facility in handling tools, you should have no difficulty in learning this time-honored craft. Its satisfactions are enormous; even if you have to pass up tooled leather and settle for inexpensive everyday cloth, you still have great opportunities for fine, neat workmanship and imaginative decoration.
