In the long annals of decorative art, no tool is more evident than the brush. Consider the magnificent cave paintings of Altamira in Spain and the Perigord in France -both testimony to the fact that men of the Paleolithic age were skilled with brush and colors. In China and Japan, since the Shang Dynasty (1766-1123 B.C.), brushes have constituted the chief graphic instruments. Within the period of recorded history, man has converted animal hairs and plant fibers into brushes — the tools with which he records his history and pictorially expresses his impression of the world around him.
