Crafts Stand-up type glaze is a most versatile decorating medium often neglected by hobby ceramists, or, if used at all, usually employed to make a series of dots around the rim of a piece or to accent a design in some other manner. It is perfectly correct to use the glaze in this way, but it has far more potential, needing only a little experimentation to be discovered. PART 1 of this chapter described how stand-up glaze can be used to create scroll borders, small flower shapes and birds; this section will give instructions for some other techniques.

The design on the vase pictured here was painted with white stand-up glaze, using only one brushstroke - the teardrop or petal stroke. By varying the length and width of this stroke, and by the combination of strokes, many designs can be formed. For this project, the stand-up glaze was allowed to retain its white color, but it could be colored for an entirely different effect; different methods of coloring the glaze will be given at the end of these step-by-step instructions.

Step 1 - Select a plain piece of greenware, or one which has a plain area suitable for the design, and carefully clean it.
