Step 1 - Select a suitable piece of heavily cast greenware, and remove the mold seam lines.
Step 2 - Enlarge the pattern given here (to fit your greenware), and transfer it to the piece with graphite paper or clay carbon paper. For ease in transferring the design to the greenware, hold the pattern in place by slipping one or 2 rubber bands over the greenware.
Step 3 — Using the curved end of the clean-up tool, deeply incise the outlines of the individual grapes, the leaves and stems and the horizontal band.
Incising is accomplished by holding the tool as a pencil is held, and repeatedly drawing the blade along the pattern outline until the groove is of the desired depth. As mentioned previously, smoother incised lines will result if each line is lightly scratched several times, rather than trying to attain the total depth with one cut.
Step 4 - Holding the tool at about a 45° angle, scrape away the background from around the design for approximately 3/8", so that it blends into the surface of the piece. This is accomplished by applying less pressure on the tool as it is drawn away from the design areas.
At this point, the band around the piece and the as yet uncarved design should stand in relief from the surface of the piece.
