
Various other methods can be used to finish carved pieces, some of which are:
• The design can be painted with translucent underglaze colors, then the entire piece glazed with a transparent glaze.
• After the bisque firing, the piece can be antiqued with thinned translucent underglaze color, and then be glazed with clear glaze.
• Non-firing colors can be used on non-utilitarian items, with the designs painted in natural colors and then the entire piece antiqued.
The carving of designs onto plain greenware pieces is surely one of the most rewarding of ceramic techniques, since the "work" is enjoyable and the finished pieces are each "one of a kind." Almost all designs are suitable for carving, and ideas may be garnerd from greeting cards, wrapping paper, magazine and newspaper photos, children's books, wallpaper and fabric.
