Slip painting is one of the most versatile methods of altering the surface of green-ware pieces, and investigation of its variations are recommended to the hobby ceramist. The technique can be applied to any type of greenware, and numerous finishes can be used to further vary the finished pieces. Designs can be built up of just slip, or underglaze colors can be added to the slip so that the designs will be precolored.
The directions which follow are for the pictured piece, suggestions for other applications and finishes are at the end of this chapter.
