Another aid to distinction is a proper base. Bases give formality and dignity. They also help secure balance, and protect table surfaces. In addition to the usual commercial bases of round, oval, and rectangular blocks of walnut and mahogany, you can have individual ones made from old wooden sugar-bucket lids, round metal cooky-box lids painted or electroplated in brass or copper, straw hot plate holders, pie plates, and bamboo mats. Shoe polish will help condition bases. Use liquid black on black bases, oxblood for mahogany, and brown for walnut. Furniture wax will cover a scratched base.
