Crafts Although painting is a highly skilled profession, it is attracting more and more novices every year. Winston Churchill and Dwight D. Eisenhower are among the amateurs whom everyone knows and chances are that some of your own friends are amateur painters too.

It seems that everyone who wants to paint can paint. We know quite a number of persons who devote practically all their spare time to painting. Their skills vary, of course, but all of them are pretty good. Each is at least good enough to be moderately satisfied with most of his work, and every one of them knows he will continue to improve.

It is a good idea, if you can, to join an art class, for a sound knowledge of the basic techniques will enable you to progress more rapidly. If you cannot study with a professional, there are several ways of getting started. Some amateurs who are pretty good now just sat down at an easel and started to paint, with no more training than that of the long-forgotten drawing class in elementary school.

Tracing reproductions of paintings, drawings, or photographs is highly recommended by some amateurs we know. It gives them the feel of drawing, they say, and afterwards they are able to undertake an original work with some degree of confidence. Others started with those paint-by-numbers kits that are sold by stationery stores and hobby shops. These kits may not help your drawing, but they do give you experience in mixing and laying on colors.
