Disassembly and Assembly
To disassemble the purifier shown in Figs. 5-13 and 5-14, unplug the cord from the outlet, and lift out the chemical-filter frame—this will discharge the capacitor. Next, unscrew the thumb nut and lift off the rear grille with the plastic filter and frame. The ionizer is now exposed for testing.
CAUTION! This air purifier has a high-voltage section with 6200V dc output. Extreme caution must be used when servicing.
To remove the ionizer, release the "quarter-turn" fasteners at each side of the ionizer and remove the ionizer frame and collector plate. Pull off the high-voltage lead wire from the ionizer.
When replacing the collector plate be sure it is straight, since a warped collector plate would change the spacing between the ionizer wire and collector plate. This could cause high-voltage arcing.
The ionizer wire should be replaced if corroded or kinked. When replacing, the wire should be carefully placed in the groove of each insulator spool. The tension should be even on each up-and-down pass of the wire with some stretch in the spring at each end to keep the wire taut. Cut off any excess wire at the spring so that a stray end will not cause a high voltage arc.
