Plastic housings can be cleaned with "Fantastic" or the equivalent. Mechanical parts should be cleaned with a petroleum-based solvent such as kerosene, naphtha, or Varsol. Do
not use gasoline for this puipose. Electrical parts should be cleaned with one of the aerosol products designed for this puipose. The active agent is usually Freon. Carbon tetrachloride was once a shop standby, but it is not the healthiest material to have around—prolonged inhalation of the fumes can cause liver damage. Freon is much safer.
Many repairmen construct or purchase a cleaning vat. The dimensions should be large enough to accept the largest component with which you expect to work. An air-conditioning repair shop would require a larger vat than one which specializes in portable power tools. The vat should have a tray for holding small parts and a lid which can be closed when the tank is not in use. Some commercial models feature a spray head and a filtering system.
