A triac is used to chop current flow through a lamp, heater, or other resistive appliance or a universal motor. The triac can be an RCA type 40429 which will handle up to 720W and the diac, which controls the triac, can be an RCA type 40583. To use this device, power plug P is inserted into an ac outlet and the appliance to be checked is plugged into a female ac receptacle (J), before closing switch S, voltage-control potentiometer R2 should be set to its maximum resistance position. Then, when S is closed, R2 can be adjusted to vary the voltage applied to the appliance to determine its operating characteristics at reduced voltages.
