Generally North Americans enjoy a moderate summer and don't require a great deal of mechanical cooling in our homes. There are, however, those inevitable midsummer heat waves that make us all wilt. For some people the solution is to go out and spend $200 or so on an air conditioner (plus the money to install it and to pay for the power it consumes) just for those few hot weeks per year. But before we do that we should ask ourselves: "Do we Canadians really need air conditioning in our homes?"
