Energy Savings • Buy the proper size. Decide how much space you really need to cool (recreation room, bedroom?) and ask the salesman to show you the right size. Air conditioners are rated by Btu of cooling per hour and will probably be available in the range of 4,000 to 24,000 Btu per hour.

• Buy the most efficient unit in the size you need. You want the one that uses the least electricity (watt-hours) for a given amount of cooling. A convenient way of comparing is to use the Energy Efficiency Rating or EER.
