Hobbies Ordinary family meals can become all-round treats if you literally add a little spice. But the end product is less important than the enjoyment that you, the specialty chef, get out of trying new recipes and adding new ingredients. Forget the boring old standbys as often as you can; see what you can do with such ingredients as tangy cheese, herbs and spices, wines and sour cream, sweet fruits and Chinese water chestnuts. Collect recipes from your friends, from newspapers, from magazines, from the fine new cookbooks that are almost flooding the market, and build up your own notebook or card file of special recipes—old favorites used in New England's early days, or exotic novelties from far away.

Baking has been neglected more than fine home cooking. But it can be even more rewarding than mastering the recipes of the gourmets. The woman who takes pride in producing delicate little cookies and lavish creamy cakes, beautifully and subtly decorated, will find pleasure not only in the baking but in the wide-eyed reception of her delectable products. Cake decorating is an art in itself. And the true hobbyist will spurn all package mixes for either cake or frosting. It is what you yourself give to the process of baking that returns the greatest enjoyment.
