Planning the vegetable garden is something we read about in most books on gardening but find difficult to put into practice. Each garden requires a plan to suit its size, the conditions that exist, the particular vegetables the gardener desires to grow and the quantities of each that the family can use, therefore it is impossible for anyone to suggest a plan to suit every garden.
We have to remember we are gardeners, not farmers. To have a greater quantity than the family can consume waiting to be harvested usually means waste of space, time and labour. Home gardening is also a spare-time hobby, not a full-time occupation. The hours available for this hobby must be considered when planning what to grow.
Our chief need is for a guide as to what should be done, and when, to avoid spaces filled with plants all going to seed and no space to sow those which will be needed in few weeks time.
A common error in many gardens is the placing of onions, which must not receive any water at their roots once maturing has started, right next to peas, beans or some other vegetable that requires copious watering during the same period.
