Here are a few facts that may influence your choice of a pet. Dogs are the most companionable of all pets, but walking a dog three or four times a day can be confining. Cats need never leave your home, but you had better keep an effective spray deodorant handy.
Monkeys are probably the most intelligent pets you can get. It is easy to teach them wonderful tricks, but it is virtually impossible to house-break them. The marvelous talking mynah birds from Asia and the little parakeets largely from Australia are unhappy in their cages, but you will have to clean up after them if you let them out.
You never have to change the water in a tropical fish bowl, but it must be kept at an even temperature summer and winter. You must change water in a goldfish bowl frequently, but the temperature is not important.
An ocelot is a handsomely spotted, leopardlike cat that has come into recent favor as a pet. They are usually friendly and playful in captivity, but their play can be very dangerous.
Whenever you buy any animal from either a pet shop or an individual, reserve the right to return the animal if it does not get a clean bill of health from your veterinarian. Take the animal directly to the doctor before taking it home. The seller should give you a record of any injections the animal has had so that your veterinarian can give it any supplemental shots that are necessary or advisable.
