Hobbies Parrots can speak quite distinctly, but there is a peculiarity to the sound that we speak of as parroty for the want of any better word. The parrot, unlike the mynah, does not seem to be unhappy in a cage. Like the mynah, parrots may be quite expensive.

Parakeets, often called budgies, are small and highly colorful. When you first bring a parakeet into your home, he will probably be quite shy. However, he will usually become adjusted in a day or two and will be quite willing to perch on your finger. We must warn you, though, that there is an occasional maverick that never gets friendly. While parakeets can be taught to talk, it is a pretty bad imitation of the real thing, and as with a parent and a baby, only the owner will understand the words. A tractable parakeet is affectionate and easy to train to do simple little tricks.

Guinea pigs and hamsters are cute, short-tailed rodents that make cuddly pets. They are quite stupid little animals and are responsive only to food and the reproductive urge. Most of the hamsters that are kept as pets, though bred here now, originally came from Europe and Central Asia. If you get a pair of these cuties, you will be in the hamster business in very short order, for a female will produce several litters of twelve or more a year.
