Hobbies Raising pets can be great fun and it can also be a profitable business. There are dozens of animals to choose from: cats, dogs, ocelots, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, skunks, rabbits, chinchilla, canaries, parrots, parakeets, and mynah birds. Tropical fish and goldfish are fun to raise, but they are not "pets" in the usual sense of the word.

There are advantages and disadvantages to be considered in selecting any kind of pet. Before deciding to raise (or just keep) pets, learn everything you can about the kind that interests you. There are many good books on pets that will give you valuable information. Your pet shop can be helpful, too. The proprietor loves animals or he wouldn't be in the business, and he is not going to mislead you, for he is just as interested in the welfare of the animal as he is in making a sale.

Don't be guided in your choice of a pet by what people say unless they are people who talk from long experience. You have heard it said that you should not keep a large dog in an apartment. Yet Dr. James R. Kinney,* one of the greatest contemporary veterinarians, writes that "a dog is better off in the city than in the country."
