From an energy supply stand point, propane is very attractive. Our country produces about 120 000 barrels of propane a day, but consumes only 50 000 barrels. The National Energy Board predicts that this surplus will continue for the next 20 years. And since propane and natural gas heating systems use almost identical equipment, adapting from propane to natural gas is a simple procedure.
There are two propane conversion options. You can install a propane conversion burner in your present oil furnace — a certified propane fitter can tell you if it's possible — or you can install a complete propane furnace. You'll need advice on size requirements from your local utility company.
Propane heating systems are regulated by the Canadian Gas Association and, as with natural gas, there are specific regulations for the storage, handling and control of propane.
