
It's no secret that turning down the furnace at night will help lower your home heating costs. But what about turning it down during the evening while the whole family's in the TV room ? And during those cool, gusty days of autumn, do you really need the furnace going?
Obviously, the more often you can turn your furnace down, or off completely, the better. But in Canada, there aren't many months you can go completely without heat. To supplement your central heating system, or to heat certain areas or rooms, other sources are available. Some are relatively new, such as solar heating; others are updated versions of old standbys.
Wood stoves have recently made a comeback in this age of costly fossil fuels. Even your living room fireplace can be made more efficient. And kerosene heaters, although their use should be limited, can provide extra heat in emergencies.
