Question: I've heard compost material really helps a garden. How do I build a compost heap?
Answer: Compost material does benefit your garden's tilth and productivity, but there's a proper way to do it. The secret lies in the ingredients and the construction of the pile.
Build your pile in layers about 15 centimetres thick. The first layer should include vegetable wastes, raw fish and green weeds. The second layer should be made up of manure, wood chips, pine needles, hay, straw and shredded newspaper (to add body to the compost). Throw leaves and grass clippings onto the third layer. On top add soil, lime and bone-meal. Now start layering again.
After two weeks, turn the pile from top to bottom, thoroughly mixing the separate layers.
After that turn the pile about once a week. When the compost is about half decomposed it is ready to be spread over your garden.
Question: How should I choose a lawn fertilizer, and, is there a way to determine how much I'll need?
Answer: Each fertilizer manufacturer specifies recommended spreading rates on its labels. Read the label for each fertilizer or consult a lawn care manual. Differences in the N-P-K ratios mean different spreading rates.
