Household Repairs Note. Call a serviceman if machine doesn't work properly, but before doing so, check and correct points noted below.

Doesn't work. Check: Is it plugged in? Has fuse blown?

Labors. Clean filters. Your problem may also be a voltage drop. Such drops are often temporary but

sometimes continue. If conditioner labors only briefly, don't worry. But if laboring continues, call serviceman.

Freezes. Turn off unit at once. Restart after a few hours.

Compressor cycling—turning on and off at short intervals. Move thermostat up two points.

Noisy. Check whether grille or window is loose. Shim up conditioner with wedges if it is not level. Oil fan motor.

Cooling efficiency drops. This can happen if sun shines on conditioner for any length of time. Hang an awning over it.

Heat from heat-pump model drops. Temperature outside has dropped and coils on weather side have iced up. Defrost conditioner by turning it to cooling cycle for a few minutes. Then switch to heating.
