Household Repairs Small holes, tears. Clean metal with steel wool. Apply plastic aluminum.

Large holes, tears. If edges are more than 3/16" apart, cut a patch out of sheet aluminum. Clean patch and area around hole with steel wool. Spread plastic aluminum or epoxy glue on patch and press down. Patch can also be soldered (see Basic Methods: How to Solder Metal).

Seam between two pieces of aluminum open. If previously soldered, heat metal with torch and apply new solder. Otherwise, glue pieces together with plastic aluminum.

Note. If there is strain on a patch or seam, riveting is advisable (see Basic Methods: How to Fasten Metal).

Heavy aluminum broken. Solder or apply epoxy glue to the broken edges and press together.

Aluminum separated from other materials, such as felt, glass, etc. See household decorative accessories (metal).

Dents. Hold a block of wood over concave side of dent. Hammer out carefully (use light taps, not heavy blows) with a rubber mallet. Hammer from edges of dent toward the center.
