Household Repairs Note. Fix holes in a muffler or exhaust pipe immediately. The danger of being killed by carbon monoxide is too great to take chances.

Small holes in exhaust pipe. Clean metal with a knife and steel wool. Spread plastic steel over holes.

Small holes in muffler. Clean metal thoroughly and cover hole with plastic steel. Pinholes can also be plugged with short self-tapping screws.

Large holes in exhaust pipe. As a temporary repair, cut off the top, bottom, and rims of a tin can. Cut can down the seam, then wrap the metal around the exhaust pipe over the hole. Bind tightly in place with strong flexible wire.

Large holes in muffler. For a temporary repair, cut a steel or aluminum patch large enough to overlap the hole W on all sides. Clean metal around hole thoroughly and apply a continuous strip of plastic steel. Set patch in place and bind with string until adhesive sets. You can then, if you wish, drill small holes through the two sheets of metal and secure the patch further with self-tapping screws.

Exhaust pipe loose, dangling. If brackets have rusted out, loop bailing wire twice around the pipe and then secure the ends to the body frame.
