Note. Roughly the same things that happen to an automobile engine can happen to a marine engine. Problems can be avoided by taking care of engine as directed in instruction manual. Let an expert make repairs, but before calling on him, check points noted below:
Hard to start. Check: Is battery dead or low? Are you out of gas? Is ignition system wet?
Stops. How is the fuel supply? Is fuel system clogged? Is there a broken wire in ignition circuit? Is propeller fouled?
Runs badly. Any number of things can cause this. Get an expert.
Propeller nicked. See
boat—outboard motor.
Propeller srxaft stuffing box leaks. If leak occurs only when engine is running and it is not severe, there is nothing to worry about; but if leak occurs when engine is stopped, it should be fixed. First tighten grease cup on stuffing box. If this doesn't work, tighten the gland nut just enough to stop drip (if you tighten too much, it will cause shaft to bind). If this still doesn't work, loosen gland nut and replace packing inside.
