Household Repairs Topside seams open. Scrape out old caulking with a beer can opener and prime seams with paint. Smooth on glazing compound or marine-grade trowel cement. Let dry. Sand and apply a second coat of paint. Fill in any remaining cracks or depressions with more glazing compound. Sand when dry and apply final coat of paint.

Bottom seams open. If it is a racing boat, treat seams as above. Otherwise, after scraping seams open and priming, fill with glazing compound and groove it mward slightly to allow for swelling of the planks. Let dry. Then sand and apply finish coat of paint.

Instead of using conventional marine paint for the final coat, you may apply Seaprene or Vinylon. These coatings, and others similar to them, form continuous hides that completely seal the hull and flex under impact rather than cracking.

Seams expand and contract excessively. Fill with Alroy 707 or Polypoxy caulking.

Breaks, splits in wood. Fill with epoxy or resorcinol glue. For emergency repairs, use 3-Ton Adhesive, which sets in about five minutes.

Wood rotting. Apply a special wood toughener called Calignum. If affected wood is thin, sand thoroughly and then simply apply Calignum with a brush. On thick wood, drill %" holes approximately 3&" apart into wood and funnel in Calignum until wood surface is slick. Then plug holes with wood dowels.
