Household Repairs It costs so little extra to have glass cut for you that I recommend you do it that way. However, if you want to do the job yourself, you can very easily (but only on single-thick glass like that used in small windowpanes).

Wash the sheet of glass with soapy water. Place it on a clean, firm surface. Use a wood yardstick as your straight edge. Hold glass cutter, slots down, between your first and second fingers with your thumb under the handle. Hold cutter straight up and down and, starting 1/8" from edge of glass farthest from you, press it firmly to glass. Then draw it in a straight, continuous stroke with even pressure along the straight edge toward you.

To break glass, clasp it at end of cut between the fingers of your two hands. Hold firmly on either side of line. Snap quickly downward (away from cut). Another way to break glass is to hold one of the cut ends off the table several inches and tap directly underneath the cut with the end of the glass-cutter handle. To break off a narrow strip of glass, hold it in one hand, slip cutter slot over the edge and snap downward. If uneven edges are left after breaking the glass, you can break them off with the glass-cutter slots or with pliers.
