Household Repairs Several types of ready-mixed concrete are available at building supply stores. These are very convenient to use although somewhat more expensive than homemade mixes. If you are not sure which type you need, tell the dealer how you plan to use it.

If you mix your own concrete, take pains to measure accurately. The proportions of the various mixes commonly used are given in the mending section.

Cement, sand, aggregate, and lime to be used must be clean and free of vegetable matter. Cement is usable as long as it can be crumbled in the hand easily. If old cement is lumpy, screen it.

Ordinary Portland cement can be used for all work. But in cases where the concrete is exposed to freezing and thawing or salt action (as on a driveway or walk) it is advisable to use cement containing an air-entraining agent. This is designated Type IA Portland cement.

Latex cement is a new kind of cement that is mixed with a chemical instead of water. It is used primarily for leveling uneven surfaces since it can be troweled on in very thin layers.

In Portland cement mortar, use coarse, sharp sand—not fine stuff that is almost dusty. Do not use sea sand unless it has been thoroughly washed in fresh water.
