Household Repairs Canvas ripped. Trim away loose threads. Then carefully pry canvas from wood for about 1" on either side of tear and W at the ends. Cut canvas patch the size of the loosened canvas. Spread Elmer's waterproof glue on one side of patch and slip patch through hole and smooth down. Then coat top of patch with more glue and press down loose canvas. This patch is adequate but is improved by applying a second, slightly larger patch over the tear when the first patch dries.

To make a hurry-up patch, scrape some of the paint from the area around the hole. Cut a canvas or balloon-cloth patch to cover. Spread Duco cement under torn canvas if it is loose. Then coat patch liberally with cement and spread a thin layer on canvas. Smooth down patch. You'll be ready to go again as soon as cement dries in 30 to 60 minutes.

Ribs, planks cracked or broken. If breaks are not serious, coat them with Elmer's waterproof glue. Ribs can be clamped, in a fashion, with C-clamps. Splits in planks may possibly be brought together somewhat if you turn the canoe over and weight down the broken area with a 50-pound sack of sand. If ribs are separated from planks, cover with wax paper and weight down with sand (or weight from the outside).
