Household Repairs Holes, tears. Out of new canvas cut a patch 1/2" to 1" larger on all sides than the hole. Spread white lead or white lead paint on deck under hole. Lay patch under hole and cover with more white lead. Tack down old canvas over patch with copper tacks spaced 3/4" to 1" apart. Apply deck paint when white lead dries.
