Household Repairs Broken. Repair links of various sizes are available at hardware or mail-order stores. If you can obtain one of the right size, simply insert it in the chain and hammer it closed.

If chain is not subject to great strain (the chain in a toilet tank or a dog leash, for example), you can also cut out the broken link and twist wire of appropriate size through the adjacent finks. Twist ends of wire together and tuck into the chain so that they will not snag on anything the chain touches.

Chains subject to strain, such as an anchor chain, can be mended temporarily with repair links but should be welded.

Watch chains can be mended satisfactorily by looping tiny copper wire from the ends of an electric cord through the links several times. But for best results, see a jeweler.

Tangles, knots in watch chain. Don't pull. Drop loosely on a flat surface and pick out the knot with two pins.

Swivel snap on end of chain broken. Buy a replacement at hardware store, slip the bottom loop through the last link of the chain and hammer it closed.
