Household Repairs Hole in firebox. Scrub metal with detergent, rinse and dry. Then clean with steel wool and coat hole heavily with plastic steel. Henceforth, don't build fire directly on the metal. Put in a layer of gravel or vermiculite.

Grid post stuck in slot. Soak in detergent solution to remove grease. Dry. Then saturate crack between post and slot with Liquid Wrench penetrating oil and try to tap post out with a nammer and blunt chisel. Don't pound too hard. If post doesn't loosen, apply more penetrating oil and let it soak in for several hours. Then use your hammer again. When post finally comes out, clean it and the slot with steel wool. In the future, remove and clean the post periodically. Sprinkling with powdered graphite will help.
