Household Repairs Top of handle splintered by ham-mering. Glue down largest splinters with Weldwood plastic resin glue. Sand top smooth and fill cracks with plastic wood. Then tap a round metal furniture glide on to top of handle to protect it in future.

Dull. Sharpen only on the beveled side. Hold at about a 25° angle to a grinding wheel or a flat carborundum stone (in the latter case, hold chisel firmly against a triangular block of wood). Make sure you do not sharpen more at one edge of blade than the other and thus get edge out of square. Sharpen first on rough side of carborundum, then on smooth side. Then turn blade over so that beveled side is up; hold flat against smooth side of stone, and remove any burrs by stroking blade side-wise several times.
