Frayed around edges. If buttonhole is not badly frayed, whip the edges with thread. If hole is badly frayed and appearance is not too important, make two closely spaced rows of machine stitches all the way around hole. Then whip the edges by hand, or machine stitch back and forth across the parallel rows of stitches.
