Household Repairs Button off. Remove old threads. Double new thread and knot it at end. Make a small stitch through material, then bring thread up through one hole and down through another in the button. To make button stand away from the material, slip a pin through the threads on the front of the button; then continue sewing through button, running the thread over the pin. When button is secure, remove pin, pull button out as far as possible, run thread down through hole in button between the button and the fabric and loop thread several times around the button stitches. Finally, take thread down through fabric and make several overcasting stitches through the threads.

Button torn out. Place a small patch of material under hole and stitch it in place securely. Then sew on button as above.
