Household Repairs Split. Iron edges of fabric flat together. Pin if split is a long one. Sew with a straight running stitch on a machine or by hand.

Seam edges fray. If material does not fray badly, notch edges with pinking shears. If material is heavy and frays easily, protect edges with deep, closely spaced overcasting stitches. If material is light and frays easily, turn raw edge of each seam under and sew with a straight running stitch.

Hemstitched seam broken. Mending is a painstaking job. It's easier to separate hem edge entirely and rejoin to the body of the fabric with a strip of straight-edged lace. Or if appearance is not important, simply sew the hem edge over the edge of the fabric on your sewing machine or by whipping.
