Household Repairs Note. The best way to mend copper is by soldering. Use an acid flux except for electrical work, which requires a rosin flux (see Basic Methods: How to Solder Metal). It is perfectly feasible, however, to make many repairs with plastic steel. See galvanized iron. Copper color can be given the plastic by rubbing with a penny.

Small holes, tears. Clean metal thoroughly, apply flux and heat with a torch. Then run in solder.

Large holes, tears. If edges are more than %e" apart, cut a patch out of copper flashing. Steel wool patch and area around hole thoroughly. Apply flux. Then heat patch and apply a thin layer of solder on one side. Do same thing to metal around hole. Lay patch over hole, tinned surface to tinned surface. Heat until solder flows together.

Seam between two pieces open. Clean with steel wool. Heat and press together. If old solder is not sufficient, apply a little more.

Scratches. Rub with very fine steel wool.

Dents. Hold a block of wood over concave side. Hammer reverse side lightly with a rubber mallet. Work from edges of dent toward the center.
