Note. Always disconnect cord before making repairs.
Outer insulation frayed, cut, or broken but wires intact. Wrap securely with black cellophane electrical tape. Cuts in rubber insulation can also be covered with plastic rubber.
Lamp cord, extension cord, or cord to motor broken. Cut cord in two. Strip off 2" of insulation on the wires on either side of cut. Bend opposing wires around each other and then twist together. If you have a soldering iron, apply solder. Then wrap each of the two mended wires with cellophane electrical tape. Be sure no metal is exposed. Then overwrap both wires together with more tape.
Heater cord (for irons, toasters, other heating appliances) broken. In an emergency, mend as above. But replace cord with a new one as soon as possible.
Lamp cord broken at socket. Cut off below socket and pull socket apart. Loosen two screws that hold broken wires. Remove 3/4" of insulation from end of each of the wires in the cord and twist strands of small wires tightly together. Insert both wires through socket cap, tie Underwriters' knot and wrap each wire around one of the screws. Wrap from left to right so that wires are drawn in closer as you tighten screws. Reassemble socket.
