Shallow scratches in reinforced fiberglass. Sand clean and brush on polyester resin available from boat dealers.
Deep scratches, gouges in reinforced fiberglass. Sand. Mix
W cuttings of fiberglass mat or cloth with polyester resin to form a putty. Trowel into scratch. Sand smooth when dry.
Breaks in opaque reinforced fiberglass. Open small breaks with a file. Then with a disc sander, feather back the edges around the hole for about 3". Out of fiberglass cloth or mat cut a patch to cover sanded area. Lay it on a sheet of cellophane, spread polyester resin uniformly over it, cover with another sheet of cellophane and with your hands or a wood paddle work the resin thoroughly into the fabric. Then brush polyester resin on area to be patched. Remove top sheet of cellophane from patch, lay patch over hole and smooth down. When the resin has set, remove cellophane. Sand the patch and apply additional patches of fiberglass in the same way until desired thickness is achieved. Then sand and brush on one or two more coats of resin to obliterate the weave of the cloth.
If break is large and compound, cut out the damaged area with a metal-cutting saw and feather back the edges of the hole. Mold a thin sheet of aluminum, or a piece of shirt-cardboard covered with cellophane, over the hole on one side and hold in place with pressure-sensitive tape. Then patch hole with fiberglass cloth or mat as above.
