Household Repairs Small holes. Shred a scrap of the vinyl flooring into tiny shavings and mix with a small amount of methyl ethyl ketone or acetone until a putty is formed. Then add a small amount of lacquer or clear fingernail polish. Surround hole with cellulose tape to keep mixture from spreading. Apply putty with a spatula or knife to the level of the tape. After it has set for a few minutes, remove tape. Added thickness created by tape will allow for shrinkage of the mixture as it dries.

Large holes. Hold a piece of vinyl flooring tightly over the hole and cut through both layers at once with a sharp knife. Dig out old flooring and adhesive. Spread in new vinyl flooring cement. Set in patch and weight down.

Cuts, tears. Lay a 1" strip of smooth, heavy-duty aluminum foil over the cut and fasten one end with friction tape. Smooth the foil down with your finger. Heat a hand iron to highest temperature. Then pull the point of the iron over the foil toward you several times. Do not bear down or hold iron in one spot. Edges of cuts should now be sealed together. Wipe foil with a damp rag and remove it. Clean vinyl with water and an abrasive household cleanser to remove dull streak left by foil.
