Joints loose. Sand off old glue on the tenon and in the mortise. Apply Weldwood plastic resin glue and reset the joint. Keep joint under pressure for 24 hours. This is most easily done by looping a strong cord around legs, arms, or back of chair and tightening like a tourniquet. Pad the cord where it bears on the wood.
If joint keeps coming loose no matter how much glue is applied, try one of the following tricks:
(1) After joint is glued and set, tap glue-coated toothpicks into mortise around the tenon. Cut them off flush with joint when glue dries.
(2) Apply glue to tenon, wrap with thread, apply more glue and force into mortise.
(3) This is frowned on by cabinet-makers, but it works. After joint is glued and set, drive a small screw into the tenon from the outside of the mortise. Countersink head and cover with plastic wood stained to match chair.
Broken rung, slat, leg. If the break runs with the grain, apply Weldwood plastic resin glue to the split and clamp together for 24 hours. If clamps are difficult to adjust because of contours of wood, bind wood with wax paper and string.
If break is across the grain, the piece must be doweled together. Let an expert do this. Lining up the holes in the two pieces is difficult.
