Handle broken. File off heads of rivets, if any, and drive them out. Dig or drill wood out of ferrule. If this proves difficult, put tool head in a fire and burn handle out. Insert new handle in ferrule and rivet in place with steel rivets.
Tool head bent. Place in vise and bend slowly. Hammering does little good.
Hoe9 spade, trowel, mattock, dull. Clamp tool head in a vise and sharpen with a medium-coarse metal file. Hold the file at both ends and stroke it toward the cutting edge of the tool. Do not file on the back stroke. And do not feather the cutting edge too much —it should resemble a chisel edge, flat on the back and beveled in the front.
