Household Repairs Small holes. Clean metal with steel wool and cover holes with plastic steel or plastic aluminum.

Large holes, tears. Clean out dust and debris. Spread a liberal coat of asphalt roofing compound on metal over and around hole. In this lay a strip of freezer-grade aluminum foil. Smooth down and cover with more roofing compound.

Gutter sags. Adjust hangers or install new ones. It gutter is bent, take it down and straighten it on the ground.

Straps on hungers broken. Most gutter hangers consist of a loop of metal strapped around the gutter. From the top of this strap another strap runs to the roof. The straps are riveted together, but frequently the rivet breaks. When this happens, join the two straps with a small nut and bolt.

Ice builds up in gutter, backs up water, which leaks through the roof. This can be prevented by looping electric soil-heating cable in a zigzag along the edge of the roof and over the gutter. When the cable is warm, it cuts channels through the ice and permits water to run off. But the only permanent cure is to install an eaves flashing strip under the roofing over the roof deck. Get a roofing contractor to do this.
