Household Repairs Also see stepladder.

Note. Don't let a hasty, patchwork job kill you. A new ladder is cheaper than a broken neck.

Rung of wood ladder broken. If the rung passes all the way through the side rails (so you can see the ends), saw it off close to the inside of the rails. Then drill out wood remaining in rails with a brace and bit and cut out the nails which held the ends of the rung with a triangular metal file. Secure a piece of hickory the same size as the holes. Apply Elmer's waterproof glue in the holes and insert the rung by driving it carefully through from one side of the ladder to the other. Anchor the ends of the rung with finishing nails.

If the broken rung is set into mortises in the rails (the ends are not visible), cut it off about 3" from each rail. Then with a hammer and chisel split the remaining pieces and pull them out (but don't bend them back and forth so violently that the rails are split). Cut nails that held rung with a file. With a brace and bit, bore one of the holes all the way through the rail. Apply glue in holes. Then insert a new hickory rung by driving it through the open rail hole across the ladder and into the mortise in the other rail. Secure ends with finishing nails.
